Meet Nick and Silke!

Name: Nick and Silke
Age: 43 and 43
Location: Minnesota, USA

TBL: What are you passionate about?
Nick and Silke: We are passionate about turning recycled glass bottles into functioning bottle lamps, lighted bottles, bottle plant holders and finding new ways to upcycle glass bottles. We also like to share our passion by teaching other people how to make their own bottle lamps. It’s exciting when our blog readers send us pictures to share their finished bottles and to see the creative ways in which they add their own special touches.

TBL: When did you discover your passion?
Nick and Silke: About 1 1/2 years ago. We went to a local craft show and, after walking away from a table filled with different lighted wine bottles, Nick said, “I can do that!” A week later we had our first finished lighted bottle and we were both hooked.

TBL: How has your passion enriched your life?
Nick and Silke: Having a hobby that turned into a passion for the both of us has helped us grow closer as a couple.

TBL: What keeps you going?
Nick and Silke: Friends and family started giving us really cool bottles. It is fun and sometimes challenging to find new ways to decorate the bottles. When you start to see other people sending you their pictures and ideas, you really begin to see the start of a whole new community.

TBL: What stage of life are you in? Are you enjoying it?
Nick and Silke: We are actually in a state of limbo right now, in an exciting way. We know that we want to move within the next year, but haven’t decided where to move to yet. Silke’s family lives in Germany, so we’re thinking of moving there for a while. Florida or South Carolina are also on our list. Being middle-aged with the children almost grown up, the world is our oyster.

TBL: What would you say is your greatest accomplishment in life so far? What were some of the things you’ve learned from it?
Nick: Traveling to Germany. I never thought about traveling abroad, much less being able to. Now not only have I traveled there, but I also have an extended family in Germany! I learned to stay open-minded.
Silke: I’ve had many different job titles over the years, so I’m confident in my ability to work and provide. As a self-taught website developer, I’m proud of the many sites I’ve created in the past several years for our clients, as well as the ones we use for our personal use. I’ve come to realize that, as long as I put my mind to it, I can accomplish great things.

TBL: Do you feel comfortable sharing a mistake/disappointment from your life with us? What have you learned from it?
Nick and Silke: This is the second marriage for both of us. We both learned that good communication is a must in order to maintain a healthy relationship.

TBL: What are your goals for your future?
Nick and Silke: We would like to do the art fair circuit for a year–give it a try at least–to see if we can make a go of it. We both love to travel and meet new people so it sounds like a perfect fit for us.

TBL: Who has been the most influential person in your life? Why?
Nick and Silke: We both have very loving and supportive parents.

TBL: Do you have a favorite recipe you’d like to share?
Nick and Silke: Schnitzel  is one of our favorite German recipes and very easy to prepare. It’s a thin slice of breaded meat, pan-fried and served with a mushroom cream sauce, your choice of noodles and vegetables.

~Thanks Nick and Silke!
