Make Your Next Move Easy On Your Kids

Make Your Next Move Easy On Your KidsMoving with young kids can seem intimidating and overwhelming. However, it’s not impossible to do so—take heart. Here are some excellent tips for how to make your next move easy on your kids.

General Guidelines

Surprises can be fun, but not when it’s going to throw a young child’s world out of whack. Begin to prepare your children for the move a few months before, or as much as the time frame allows. Give them time to ask questions and share any concerns they have. Communicate and work through all the details with them so that they can feel involved in this life changing event. Consider buying or borrowing children’s books about moving that you can read to your child to help prepare them for the big day. If your schedule allows consider visiting your new neighbourhood and visit local parks, shops and schools together. Doing this will help your child feel familiar with their new neighbourhood before they even get there.

Pack Kid’s Rooms Last

While getting everything packed up quickly is certainly a priority, it is important to help the kids feel settled for as long as possible. Try to pack up the rest of the house before you tackle their room and their toys. If you have time when they aren’t present, pack up the toys that haven’t been used for a while. Save yourself some trouble and leave out the favorite toys until the very last day!

Unpack Kids’ Rooms First

Unpacking the kids’ rooms should be relatively easy considering they were probably the last few boxes that were packed. Having their room set up helps children feel settled and safe in their new environment. Take the time to put their beds back up the very first night.  Being surrounded with their things will help kids feel more secure and comfortable with the new living arrangement. As an adult, you can process change a lot easier and faster than a child can.

Moving can seem like a huge process and may be a little scary for the whole family. However, with these three steps it doesn’t have to be frightening for your kids. They will be prepared and hopefully even excited to get into their new home. Make it fun for them and involve them in setting up their new rooms.
